Chapter Twenty-Seven

I blew through chores the next morning and parked my truck at Hattie’s house. I ran around back to find the RV empty. He couldn’t have gotten far without a vehicle. I hoped to God that I wouldn’t find an empty bourbon bottle in the RV and have to dredge the pond to find his drunken carcass. He had some explainin’ to do first.

“Buck.” I scanned the yard. “Buck.”

The back door to the house opened, and Hattie stuck her head out. “He’s in here.”

I blew out a breath and my heart rate dropped to within normal range.

“Before you say anything, I invited him in for breakfast.” She waited for an acknowledgment before she let me in.

Buck sat at the table and looked up with a mouthful of bacon, eggs, and hash browns. He gave me a quick nod.

“Can I get you some breakfast?” Hattie asked.

“Maybe just a cup of coffee if you have one.”

I took a seat at the table across from Buck, and Hattie set a steaming cup in front of me.

I took a sip and looked at Buck. “How’d you sleep last night?”

“Best sleep I’ve had in a week.”

Hattie pulled out a chair. “I told him he can stay as long as he wants.”

I looked from Hattie to Buck. “Don’t get too comfortable. They might be holdin’ a cell in Fremont with your name on it.”

“Dillon. Why would you say such a thing?”

I pointed across the table. “Maybe you should ask him.”

Buck swallowed hard. “I told ya, I didn’t do nothin’.”

“Tell me some more. Like how you got yourself fired.”

“I’m sure Seth already told you his version.”

“I want to hear yours.”

I waited while he finished the last couple of bites from his plate. He appeared to be stalling while he made up a story. It didn’t look like he’d be much help. I took a sip of coffee and glanced at Hattie, but her expression was unreadable.

“Well?”

“Whatever he told you, I didn’t do it. I’ve got his number now, so he wants me gone.”

“Buck, what does that mean?” Hattie looked almost as interested as me.

“It means he’s the one who poisoned the horses.”

“So, you don’t think it was the Whitehawks that poisoned the horses?”

“Not anymore.”

“How do you know that?”

“I overheard him talkin’ on the phone. I think he’s fixin’ to do it again.”

“That’s a pretty strong accusation. What did you hear?”

“He said he would take care a you and Jenny Lee one way or another.”

“Who was he talking to?”

“That I don’t know.” He looked at Hattie. “Can I get another cup a coffee?”

Hattie nodded and left the table.

“Can you put a little somethin’ in this one?”

“I’ve got some fresh cream.”

Buck shook his head. “I was thinkin’ more like a shot a whiskey.”

“What do you think he meant by take care of us?”

“Well, I don’t think he meant readin’ you a bedtime story and tuckin’ you in every night.”

Hattie set a fresh cup of coffee in front of him. “Be nice, Buck. He’s just tryin’ to help.”

“Seth’s tryin’ to drive you two off.
